DIY Bikini Top under $5 : A Comprehensive Guide/step by step
Creating your own bikini top can be a fun and rewarding experience. Not only do you get to design something that fits your body perfectly, but you also get to express your creativity and style. In this blog post, we'll walk you through a step-by-step guide on how to create your own bikini top, based on the tutorial from the YouTube video HERE
Materials Needed
To get started, you'll need the following materials:
- 20 centimeters of fabric
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Pins
- Seam ripper
- Loop turner
Step 1: Measure and Cut Your Fabric
The first step in creating your bikini top is to measure and cut your fabric. You'll need to measure from the bust point to under the bust, and then add a little extra for coverage. In the video, the presenter uses a measurement of 15 centimeters for the height of the top and 24 centimeters for the width. However, you can adjust these measurements based on your own body and the amount of gather you want to create.
Step 2: Shape Your Fabric
Instead of leaving the fabric as a rectangle, the presenter suggests adding a slight curve to the top and bottom edges. This can be done by lowering the center front and side by one and a half centimeters and then drawing a curve from the middle to the edge. This helps to create a more natural shape that aligns with the body's curves.
## Step 3: Add Seam Allowances and Cut Your Pattern
Once you've drawn your shape, you'll need to add seam allowances. The presenter adds 0.8 centimeters all around. You'll then need to cut out your pattern. Remember, this is a reversible pattern, so you'll need to cut out two pieces for each side of the bikini top.
Step 4: Create Your Straps
Next, you'll need to create your straps. The presenter cuts out two straps, each 80 centimeters long and 3 centimeters wide. Once sewn with elastic, each strap will be one centimeter high.
Step 5: Sew Your Bikini Top
Now it's time to sew your bikini top. Place the right sides of your fabric together and pin all around. Then, sew all four edges of your pieces. After sewing, you'll need to create channels for your straps by seam ripping small holes at the top and bottom of your top.
Step 6: Insert Your Straps
Using a loop turner, insert your straps through the channels you created in the previous step. Adjust the amount of gather to fit your body.
Step 7: Final Touches
Finally, trim any excess threads and adjust the straps to your desired length. You can also add a few stitches to secure the gather and keep the straps in place.
And there you have it! Your very own DIY bikini top. This is a simple and cost-effective way to create a custom piece that fits you perfectly. Plus, it's a great way to express your personal style. Happy sewing!
